1. Introduction: new technologies and the birth of personalised 21st-century medicine
In 2007 (and following the Human Genome Project), the United States National Institutes of Health (NIH) initiated the Human Microbiome Project. The research brief was:
To “improve understanding of the microbiota (bacteria that live in and on humans) involved in human health and disease” and
To “discover and characterise the human microbiome, emphasising oral, skin, vaginal, gastrointestinal, and respiratory sites” (Ref in Wikipedia.)
New laboratory tests and technologies have been developed to measure and observe the microbiome (along with data processing and storage, and artificial intelligence); this is the birth of personalised 21st-century medicine!
Please read the article carefully, and work out how you can access this new tech and make it work for yourself and your loved ones, share with others and leave your comments -thanks!
2. Profound benefits for a sick modern humanity
Says Dr. Kashyap of the Mayo Clinic:-
“Microbiome research is young, vibrant and ongoing,” - “We don’t have all the answers yet, but we know the microbiome is a component of multiple chronic diseases and an important contributor if not always the inciting factor.”
3. Doctors and wellness practitioners wake up! - It’s time to up-skill your microbiome testing and counselling skills!
Society is emerging from the medical dark ages of the 20th century, and a high-tech wellness revolution is underway. It’s now realistic to provide individualised testing with wellness counselling, which will make irritable bowel syndrome, bowel cancer, leaky gut and many associated conditions rare (and not the norm that they are becoming) in our increasingly sick city-based world.

4. New Zealand-based testing and advisory services
An internet search for microbiome+testing+nz revealed many available practitioners and testing services. I’m unable to tell you which provides the best service, so instead, I’m quoting two of the services that (IMO) provided useful advice and explanations on their website and look approachable and easy to deal with.
A. Doctor-based service at Doctor360…
Staffed by medical practitioners, “Doctor360 is a medical clinic that specialises in delivering a 360, wrap-around service for patients that come in for general medical problems, as well as injuries and specialist needs”. Here is what they had to say about their microbiome testing:-
We created a gut healing clinic just for you…
You are a unique individual. Which is why templated, standardised interventions don’t work. What you really need is functional lab testing and proper assessment to identify the underlying root causes of your digestive symptoms and a more holistic approach to healing that is custom-tailored to you. With regular support to get you through the problem-solving required for complex gut healing, you no longer have to live a life controlled by your gut.
We help address common gut issues such as:
IBS / IBD / Abdominal cramps or pain / leaky gut symptoms / SIBO / Allergies / Weakness / Diarrhea / Bloating / Fatigue

B. Complete Microbiome Stool Test by Amanda Nutrition
Amanda writes:
“I graduated in 2010 with a foundation degree and diploma in nutritional therapy from the highly respected Institute for Optimum Nutrition in the U.K. and undertake ongoing professional training and development”.
Amanda Nutrition is registered with the NZ Clinical Nutrition Association, which is recognised by Southern Cross and other health insurance providers.
She continues:
the Complete Microbiome Stool Test uses forensic technology to measure:
digestive, absorption and metabolic markers
markers of inflammation, including a measurement of increased permeability of the gut lining or ‘leaky gut’
immune reaction to gluten and a general marker for gut-immune function
presence of hidden blood or mucous in the stool
markers relating to liver detoxification of bacterial toxins
levels of beneficial bacteria and the presence of 35 potentially harmful bacteria including Helicobacter pylori, which can cause stomach ulcers
presence of yeast, including Candida, Geotrichum and Rhodotorula species
parasitic or worm infection – checking for 14 different species
