North Mavora Lakes July 2024
It's 145 kilometres from Invercargill. The biggest part of the journey seems to start once you're past Mossburn. The South Mavora Lake is always beautiful. Especially at the end of a warm winter day. We get to the North End of the south Mavora Lake and it's time to hop on a bike.
I've only got one hour of daylight but I need two hours. The path is muddy, and the gravel is deep. Biking is no fun so I ditch the bike. The sun sets, and the moon comes out, and I'm walking to the Hut. There's the hut. It looks like a fisherman's hat and indeed, fishermen do stay there.
The next morning, it's a very cold frost. I've got very warm gloves on, and I'm walking north up to Forks Hut. You can see I'm very tired. It's been a hard couple of weeks what with bereavements in the family. There’s the old Musterer’s Hut. I get there at lunchtime. There's a small moment when I'm sitting like a combination between the king and a musterer.
The way back is warm, and I'm feeling a lot happier now. It's even warm enough to take the shirt off and get some vitamin D from the sun. Walking back to North Mavora Lake. Regretfully I have to leave. Walking through the Land Rover tracks and around the deep puddles in the track. Relocating the bike. The last half-hour dash in the gathering nighttime. And lo and behold, when I got back, a South Island Robin’s been camping in my car for a day while I've been away. He looks pretty dazed. He flew away alright.
That was my wilderness journey in the Mavora lakes.
July 2024.
40 kilometres walking and biking.
It's great to get back.
I hope you can enjoy it too.
Hi Val,
(Golly, this is getting a lot of rave reviews).
I'm not disciplined. I'm grateful.
Thank you, and do get out in the sun. You deserve it.
Wow!! What magnificent photos. It would take a very disciplined person to have done a wilderness trip like this in the middle of winter. Well done
